Racing has played an important role in the culture and design of BMW motorcycles and automobiles from the company's very early beginnings. In fact, the contributions that BMW has made to both automobile and motorcycle racing over the years have changed the sport.
BMW's first racing model, the M1, was launched in and by 1982 BMW had won six Formula Two European Championships. Over 20 cars powered by BMW have won Formula One races. 33 fastest laps, 33 pole positions, 76 podium finishes, and a 1983 driver championship have been awarded to BMW powered automobiles.
BMW's first successful motorcycle, 1923's R32, featured a "boxer" twin-engine design that was utilized in most motorcycles until the 1980's. Some of BMW's current motorcycles still feature the R32's efficient twin-engine design. Anti-lock brakes were introduced in the 1980's and anti-skid technology, also known as electronic stability control, was available on BMW's motorcycles by 2007.
Aside innovative products and design BMW continues supports the sport by sponsoring Formula BMW, a Junior racing Formula category, and several brand exclusive championships.
